You Dream

You Dream

You Dream is a comic drawn depicting a character’s dream in a fantasy post-apocalypse. Drawn as a love letter to my DND Dungeon Master’s storytelling, the text was given to me, and I drew the visuals. The story is referential to the character’s internal struggles, as he realizes that everything that he’s worked for in this dark world might actually be more harmful to himself than good.

Challenge: I had to figure out how to convey this short story that has years of backstory behind it in a way that makes sense to someone with no context. My concern also was with backgrounds: they take a long time for me, personally, and I had a deadline to meet.

Solution: Since I had the text already written, I had to tell backstory moments through visuals. Even if the amount of context was minimal, it was enough to give the ideas more weight. I also found a method of using photos I had taken, or gotten through stock photo websites with licensing I could use, as backgrounds. I like the aesthetic of drawing something starkly 2D on top of a real image, and I love the outcome I had of merging the two mediums.
